So many movies these days are filled with disaster; whether it is a zombie apocalypse, a supervillain with an evil scheme, or a meteor falling towards the earth. But while we shouldn’t completely rule out the possibility of aliens invading the earth, in reality there are still a lot of disasters that could—and often do—befall the earth, and though they might not be world ending, they are often permanently world altering for anyone who experiences one. And they are more common than you think. You may not live in a hurricane zone, but that does not mean that you will not experience a power outage, water contamination, or even financial issues from a lost job.
So whether it is an earthquake, a flood, a tornado, or yes, even a zombie apocalypse, it is important to be prepared for any eventuality. Get in touch with Security Building Services and Supply and as a bonus, here are some things that every person should do in order to be properly prepared.
Create an Emergency Food Storage Supply
Starting with the basics, everyone should have at least a small emergency food supply in their home. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention recommends at least a three day supply of food per family member, including pets. This is the bare minimum however, and we are highly advised to store more than this. Remember, everything that you store should be nonperishable, and the longer it lasts the better. Furthermore, it should be easy to prepare, and stored in a cool, dry area. You might also want to store a (non-electric) burner or coals that can be used to cook things, but try to keep at least a few items that can be eaten as is. The CDC has a list of long lasting foods at the above link.
Other Emergency Items to Store
You need more than just food to survive, however, and it is recommended that you put together an emergency kit of essentials for each person in your home. Some things that you should include are medicine and medical supplies, a full first aid kit, toothbrushes, toothpaste, soap and other personal hygiene products, a toolkit, a battery-powered or hand crank radio and flashlight, extra batteries, warm clothes, and a blanket made of a material like fleece. Online there are a lot of resources to find each of these things. You will also need to store a lot of water. The CDC recommends at least a gallon of water per person, per day, for at least three days. This allows for drinking water, as well as washing, cooking, and other needs.
Come Up With a Plan
The last thing that you need to do is make sure that you have a good plan, just in case of emergency, and that your family is all aware of it. In the case of a disaster, you will not be able to rely on the use of cellphones, so you need to prepare for that eventuality. Depending on the emergency, there will be different things to do, so it is worth researching for each one, but generally you should have in place some designated emergency meeting points, plans for collecting relatives, and plans for communication, should something happen.
Learn Skills Now
If the world gets crazy and people are left on their own to obtain food, water, and other necessary resources, there is a good chance, most won’t survive. Knowing how to hunt, fish, or clean water is just not a skill they teach you in school anymore.
That doesn’t mean it isn’t important, especially in the event of an Armageddon-like event. Learn to survive without the luxuries of modern life now, while you don’t have to, rather than be forced to learn when you do have to. A lot of people take up hunting, fishing, or camping and find that they actually like it.
There are a lot of survival courses that you can take to learn this stuff, but the best way to go about it is probably simply doing it! Find someone you know that knows how to fish and ask them to take you fishing. It will be cheaper and likely more fun.
Disasters and emergencies happen, and there is nothing that we can do to stop them. But if we are prepared for them, there is at least one less thing to worry about. Having all the supplies you need to last through a short disaster, and then having the knowledge and skills to survive something a little more long-term will ensure you can keep your family safe even during the darkest times.
